Dermaplaning or a chemical peel? How Nella decides

By Marianella Dirodis ยท Corrective

Dermaplaning in the studio

People ask for one or the other by name, usually because a friend had it. Both treatments take the top layer of skin off. They do it by different means, for different reasons, and I choose between them based on what your skin is doing that day, not on what you came in asking for.

Dermaplaning is mechanical

A sterile blade glides across the skin and lifts away dead cells and the fine vellus hair, the peach fuzz. It is gentle, it is immediate, and there is no downtime. Skin feels smoother the moment you sit up, product absorbs better for days afterwards, and makeup sits flat instead of catching on the fuzz.

It is the right call for dull skin, rough texture, and anyone who wants a brighter face for an event this week. It is not a corrective treatment. It does not change pigment, and it does not do much for acne scarring.

A chemical peel is chemical

The Advanced Resurfacing Treatment uses a Skin Script formulation, layered to your tolerance, to dissolve the bond between dead cells and lift them away over the following days. Because it works below the very surface, it can brighten and even out tone, and soften acne scarring or fine lines.

That is why it comes with some flaking and dryness afterwards, and why I want to see your skin at a consultation before your first one. The peel that is right for someone with congestion is not the peel that is right for someone with sensitivity.

How I decide

If the goal is smoothness and glow with no downtime, dermaplaning. If the goal is to change something about the skin, tone, texture, scarring, a peel, and probably a series of them. Often the honest answer is both, spaced out: dermaplaning to prep, a peel to correct, dermaplaning again to maintain.

Members get dermaplaning and LED as a monthly option on both plans, and a chemical peel as a monthly option on Radiance. Either way, the decision starts with a look at your skin, and the consultation for that is free.
