Between visits: what to put on your skin, and what to stop

The retail shelf at Amazing Face Spa

I can do a great deal in an hour on the bed. I cannot undo six weeks of the wrong routine at home. So before you leave, I always tell you two things: what to use, and what to stop.

Stop first

Most routines I see have too much in them. Three exfoliants layered on top of each other. A retinoid every night on skin that is already irritated. A cleanser that strips, followed by five products trying to put back what the cleanser removed.

The first thing I usually do is take things away. Skin calms down when you stop attacking it, and a treatment lands better on calm skin.

Then the short list

A cleanser that suits your skin type. One treatment product aimed at the thing we are correcting, whether that is congestion, pigment or dryness. A moisturizer. And sunscreen, every single day, which is the one I will nag you about. Everything on the retail shelf here is something I use in treatment, and I only carry what I have seen work.

After a treatment

After a peel or dermaplaning your skin is freshly exposed, so the day of, keep it simple: no makeup if you can help it, no active ingredients, and SPF before you go outside. I will tell you when to bring your retinoid or acids back in, and it is usually sooner than you expect.

If you are not sure

Bring the bottles to your consultation, or photograph them. Ten minutes looking at what you actually use tells me more than any questionnaire, and the consultation is complimentary.
